The admissions into the postgraduate programmes at IITs are made through various exams, primarily the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for Ph.D., M.Tech. and some MS courses.
M. Tech. admissions to IIT Delhi and IIT Mumbai is done on the basis of GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering). GATE tests conceptual clarity in technical subjects and is one of the most difficult in the country. The IIT GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3 hours duration, which contains 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks. IIT GATE question paper will consist of only multiple choice objective questions.
GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordination Board - GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.
IIT Bombay
After IIT Kharagpur, the second IIT to be established was IIT Bombay. It was founded in 1958 in Powai, Mumbai (Bombay). IIT Delhi was established 3 years after IIT Bombay. IIT Bombay was set up with assistance from UNESCO and the Soviet Union, which provided technical expertise.
IIT Bombay has 13 student hostels with about 2,200 undergraduate and 3,500 postgraduate students. IIT Bombay also has schools in management (Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management) and Information technology (Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology) on its premises.
IIT Delhi
IIT Delhi was established as the College of Engineering in 1961. IIT Delhi was declared an Institution of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963. It is located in Hauz Khas, New Delhi and has an area of 1.3 square kilometres. It has 11 hostels and 26 departments, centres and schools. IIT Delhi comprises of 426 faculty members and approximately 2,200 undergraduate and 1,600 postgraduate students.
Ranking - IIT Delhi versus IIT Bombay
The Times Higher Education Supplement- QS World University Rankings 2009 - Engineering/Technology ranked IIT Bombay as 30th in the world. The Times Higher Education Supplement (2008) ranked IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay 157th and 174 th best overall universities respectively in their World University Rankings.
IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay were also ranked in the top 100 globally for technology with IIT-Bombay ranking the highest at 36th. IIT Bombay ranked 77th for Natural Sciences, and was the only IIT to feature in the 2008 rankings.
The student life at IIT Delhi is good since it is in the main city unlike other IITs which are away from the main city. The Hostel life is also great at IIT Delhi. There are numerous cultural and sports activities organised in IIT Delhi. The job placement has also been good this year despite of the recession period.
