After the country gained independence, the need for a technological institution of excellence was felt. It is in this regard that the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur was set up. The IIT Kharagpur is an autonomous institution of technological education excellence set up by the Government of India in 1951. IIT KGP, as it is popularly known, is the oldest IIT in the country. The Government of India has officially recognized it as an Institute of National Importance. In fact, IIT KGP has come to be known as one of the best engineering institutions in India.
IIT KGP prides itself in the fact that it has highest number of departments, highest student enrollment, and the largest campus. The present name 'Indian Institute of Technology' was adopted before Maulana Abul Kalam Azad formally inaugurated the Institute in 1951.
