The seven Indian Institutes of Technology at Guwahati, Mumbai, Delhi, Kanpur, Roorkee, Kharagpur and Chennai were established by the Government of India with the specific purpose of providing engineering and technological education of internationally recognised standard of excellence. The primary aim of these Institutes is to turn out engineers who not only have the most advanced technical knowledge in their chosen field but also a total view of their profession. The Institute of Technology, Benaras Hindu University at Varanasi was established by the merger of three prestigious colleges of the University, namely, College of Engineering, College of Mining and Metallurgy and College of Technology, which have to their credit excellent standards of engineering education. Indian school of mines has joined the IIT's for the selection. For Merchant Navy, selection to Nautical training ship 'Chanakya' and Marine Engineering courses is also done through the IIT entrance examination. From 2002 the following institutions will also admit students in M.Tech program through GATE and for B.Tech program through IITJEE : IIIT (Gwalior), IIIT (Allahabad), NIFFT (Ranchi) besides the IITs, ISM Dhanbad, BHU and TS Chanakya & MERI.
