The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is located in Roorkee, a small town in the state of Uttranchal in India. The British established the college as Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1847. The college was renamed the University of Roorkee in 1949. Over the years, the institution has attained the fame of a leading educational institution for its fine quality academia, and also for its brilliant engineers.
The Government of India, through an ordinance issued on September 21, 2001, declared the institution as the country's seventh Indian Institute of Technology.
The Institution is a frontrunner in higher technological education and provides excellent opportunities in basic and applied research. The institution, since its inception, has been a leading institution in research and in providing technical manpower and know-how to the country. The institution offers Bachelor's degree courses in ten different disciplines of engineering, and postgraduate degrees in fifty-five different disciplines of Engineering and Architecture. The institute has a number of departments and research centers catering to different disciplines of engineering and pure sciences.
The Institute is a member of the LAOTSE, the international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia, which facilitates exchange of students and senior scholars.
A bill passed by the Indian Parliament 21 September 2001 declared the institute as an Institute of National Importance.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is conducted at the all India level. Candidates willing to join the postgraduate programmes in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, and pharmacy have to pass this test. However, the application has to be made separately for admission to each institute.
