In an endeavour to attract best of the minds towards teaching and research, Delhi Technological University (DTU), formerly known as Delhi College of Engineering, has initiated 25 Teaching-cum-Research Fellowships (TRF).
The creation of 25 TRFs, which includes 20 fellowships at doctoral level and five at post-doctoral level, was approved today in the second meeting of Board of Management (BOM),which was held at the University campus. Each teaching-cum-research fellow will be allowed to enroll for a full-time Ph D. program and will take 10 hours per week of teaching work at B.Tech/ M.Tech level. The incumbents will be initially appointed for a period of two years, which will be further extended depending on the academic and research performance.
The expenditure involved in the grant of TRFs has been estimated around Rs 60 lakhs, per annum. The First Ordinance of the University relating to B.Tech. courses has already received approval of the Government, as per the provision of the Act. The Ordinance for M.Tech and MBA programs of DTU was also approved today by the BOM. It was also brought to the notice of the Board that the admissions to all undergraduate engineering courses of the University, from next year onwards, shall be made on the basis of the merit/ rank obtained in All India Engineering Entrance Examination, conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education, with a minimum of 60% marks in PCM to be eligible for admissions. Highlighting the achievements of the University during last three months, Prof. P. B. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, DTU informed the Board, "Apart from a major R&D tie-up with Lockheed Martin Corporation, US for development of next-generation Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, the University has entered into a collaboration with Groupe Des Ecoles Des Mines (GEM), France to foster collaboration, provide opportunity for global experience and facilitate advancement of knowledge in the field of engineering.
" The Vice Chancellor also shared students' achievements with the Board including that of undergraduate students Shravanti Joshi and Anoop Ramakrishna who have been awarded International Telecom Union Award and were invited to attend World Youth Forum 2009 in October at Geneva. Gold medal and Mondialogo Engineering Award was conferred recently on B.E. student of Electrical Engineering Shweta Chauhan, for development of an innovative design for low cost water purification system for rural application.
The DTU team worked in collaboration with the student's team of Stanford University. Similarly, Swati Rawal, PhD scholar in the Applied Physics Department has received the Best Research Paper Award in the International Conference on Optics and Photonics, 2009. The BOM also agreed the signing off a Memorandum of Understanding with the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Integrated Rural Energy Planning & Development, which among other aspects of collaboration shall facilitate exchange of faculty and partnerships in R&D in areas relating to green energy technology and climate change management. DTU is further partnering with Freescale Semiconductor Pvt. Ltd under which a Freescale Systems Laboratory will be established in the Electronics & Communication Engineering Department of DTU.
A high-end Design Centre for Photonics & Micro Electro Mechanical Systems has also been awarded to DTU by Aeronautics Development Agency, Govt. of India.
