Telecommunication education at IIT Roorkee dates back to 1957 when a B.E. programme in Telecommunication was started in the Department of Electrical Engineering of the then University of Roorkee.
In view of the increasing importance of the Electronics Engineering discipline, a separate Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering was established in 1964 to offer Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electronics& Communication and Master of Engineering degrees in Advanced Electronics and Applied Electronics & Servomechanisms.
In 1968, the postgraduate programme was restructured with specializations in the areas of Communication Systems, Control and guidance, Microwaves and Radar, and Solid State Electronics. Two new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Computer Science and Technology were started in the year 1982. Keeping in view the activities of the department, the name was changed to Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering in 1987. The Department has always been on a high growth path and has experienced and dedicated faculty with a strong commitment to engineering education. To keep pace with the current technological trends, all the undergraduate and postgraduates curricula have been recently modified and the postgraduate programmes in Microwaves and Radar and Solid State Electronics have been renamed as RF & Microwave Engineering and Semiconductor Devices & VLSI Technology.
Moreover, the Department has introduced two five-year dual degree programmes leading to B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering and M.Tech. in Information Technology and B.Tech. in Electronics & Communication and M.Tech in Wireless Communication. Besides, an M.Tech. programme in Information Technology has also been started. The Department has strong research programmes in the broad areas of: Communication Systems Computer Science and Engineering Control Systems RF & Microwave Engineering
Semiconductor Devices & VLSI Technology The Department has successfully completed a large number of sponsored research projects funded by DRDO, DST, UGC, ISRO, DOE, AICTE, MIT etc. Besides, the Department provides R&D and consultancy services to various industries. Recently, the Ministry of Information Technology has established a Centre for Manpower Development in VLSI in the department. M/S Intel Inc. has also provided a state of the art laboratory in the Department for their Planet Lab Project and M/s Cisco Systems, USA has donated equipment worth about US $ 100,000 to set up an Advanced Networking Lab in the Department.
