Compounds with Additional Elements
When hydrogen atoms of alkanes are replaced by the corresponding number of
halogen atoms, the compounds obtained are called halogen derivatives of
alkanes (Alkyl halides). The following figure shows how different halogen
derivatives are obtained from hydrocarbons:
The substituted atoms may be fluorine, chlorine, bromine iodine or any
combination of these elements.
