Toxic Agents
Mineral elements are essential for animals as well as plants, but plants
sometimes accumulate such high concentrations of minerals that they actually
kill the animals that eat them. More information is available at the "List of
Toxic Agents Found in Plants" web site. For mineral toxins, scroll down to the
heading " Cheating poisons".
Carnivorous Plants
Plants growing in bogs usually cannot obtain enough nitrogen from the soil, and
in habitats like this, carnivorous plants that catch insects have a selective
advantage over plants that cannot obtain nitrogen from digested insects. To see
what types of plants these are, check out the "Carnivorous Plant Database".
