Arboreta
Woody plants are trees and shrubs, and botanical gardens that emphasize woody
plants are often called arboreta (sing. arboretum). To tour several visit "The
Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens" homepage. Once
there, scroll down and click on "Botanical Gardens" and wander around. Near the
bottom is a heading "Other garden resources on the internet" that has links to
the pages of other gardens and arboreta.
Dendochronology
The thickness of annual rings depends on growing conditions during the years
they are formed. In good years trees produce thick rings, and in poor years they
produce thin ones. The study of tree rings is called dendrochronology. Visit the
"Laboratory for Wood Anatomy and Dendrochronoly " to see how the study of tree
rings are carried out, and the types of information that can be obtained.
